Come on, Greg Abbott (and many other lawmakers)! Do you really believe we can solve the mass shooting crisis in our country with mental health?
Certainly one part of the issue
Of course mental health is part of the issue. But we also know that several mass shooters have been under the care of mental health professionals at the time of their crimes. That didn’t deter them.
What would, though
What would have deterred them, though, is background checks before buying weapons, red flag laws and a ban on assault weapons. Who needs an AR-15?
A gun industry invention
The U.S. gun industry is who needs the AR-15, that’s who! Since guns last nearly forever and are often passed down to future generations, the gun manufacturers need new sales gimmicks. I give you that.
Recent NPR and Washington Post reporting
According to recent National Public Radio and Washington Post reporting, Smith & Wesson sought the manufacture of a civilian-type assault weapon to boost sagging sales. It’s worked.
1 in 20 Americans own one
That same reporting showed the AR-15 is the best-selling gun in America. It’s revered because it is lightweight and maneuverable. And it’s now a status symbol, in some demented way, thanks to gun violence. Statistics show 1 in 20 Americans own one.
Assault weapons ban
Of course, 25 years ago we had an assault weapons ban. But it expired after 10 years. And the votes haven’t been there to impose another.
So today?
Greg Abbott says mental health resources are the solution. He also offers prayers for the families of dead children. Gun lobbyists led by the NRA say criminals will get guns anyway. So a ban won’t work. Republicans won’t vote for anything the Democrats want, just on principle. And guns are the leading cause of death for children. Please listen, Mr. Abbott and Senator Lindsey Graham and others. You know who you are.
Who needs mental health care?
So I’d suggest it’s a bunch of legislators, led by Abbott and others, who need the mental health care. Many of the mass shooters have been getting it already. But when they snap and have their trunk of guns and ammo available, it really hasn’t done much good. Please ignore the gun lobby and act appropriately, legislators. And please, voters, elect legislators who vote your values. Your children’s lives depend upon it.
