I’ll admit my front yard looks like a sign nursery or voting site….except for the one that is missing. I’ll get to that!
No Signs While Working in Journalism
For all of the years I was in active journalism I never felt posting signs in the yard would be appropriate. While obviously we would develop opinions, our jobs required objectivity, so I didn’t think bumper stickers or yard signs sent that objectivity message. So after I retired from media advising at UT in 2009, I started letting the signs come. And I’ve enjoyed it. Some candidates have posted large almost-billboard signs in my yard since it’s on a busy street. Other signs have been more modest.
Biden’s was Just a Little Sign
And my Biden sign was of the modest variety. One night shortly after the signs went up, someone pulled them all out of the ground, but left them behind. Biden was a little damaged, but easily repaired. Back up he went with everyone else. This time, though, Biden was moved up closer to the front porch. It made him a little less visible from the street but safer, at least I thought.
We weren’t so lucky the next time. All the signs were left alone. But Biden was gone, as was the Biden sign next door and across the street.
Next Time Hanging From the Porch Railing
My next door neighbor already has replaced her sign. My replacement will be here mid-week. This time, I’ll hang the Biden/Harris sign up on the second floor porch railing. Surely that will keep it safe.
But frankly, I just don’t get it.
Just a Cardboard Political Statement
It’s just a piece of coated cardboard with a brief political message. Is it a teen-age prank? Or are more sinister motives at work? I hope it’s the former. P-L-E-A-S-E!
