‘There will come a day…’

Liz Cheney said it well during the January 6 investigation, “There will come a day when Donald Trump will be gone, but your dishonor will remain.”

Trump supporters

She was referring to those who, despite all the evidence of his wrongdoing, continue to support the disgraced ex-president. Ms. Cheney, of course, a Republican from Wyoming, lost her re-election campaign in large part because of her positions against Trump.

My-oh-my

But my goodness! How can we sit by and let yet another president be held unaccountable for his actions. Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon, he said, rather than put the country through a trial. What a precedent he set!

Two-pronged justice?

Do we have a two-pronged justice system? Donald Trump and his wrong-headed supporters think so. They believe that the Department of Justice has been “weaponized” to hurt Trump’s re-election effort. But that’s simply not the case.

Read the indictment

Please read the indictment https://apnews.com/article/trump-indictment-documents-922839660373. If this doesn’t convince you of the severity of this case, I don’t know what will. And you haven’t even seen the evidence yet.

Gerald Ford’s error

I understand where President Ford was coming from. But I think he was mistaken. By pardoning Nixon he set up the impression that presidents are immune from prosecution. The candidates saying they’d lean toward pardons are doing the same. Please don’t vote for them. Only Asa Hutchinson and Chris Christie have said they’d say “no” to a pardon. Remember, Ford didn’t win re-election. And he went to his grave believing the pardon was best for the country. But, that pardon was forever a stain on his otherwise fine congressional and vice presidential legacy.

Elizabeth Holtzman

Elizabeth Holtzman, a former member of Congress from New York, was on Ali Velshi’s show on MSNBC today. She criticized Ford at the time for what he did with that pardon. And she said that illusion remains, giving Trump the idea that, yes, he’s above the law.

Another two-pronged system

I often think we have a two-pronged system of justice for most people. Those who have money get to post bond and hire competent counsel. Those without languish in jail because they don’t have bond money. And they have to take the luck of the draw in legal public defender counsel. Perhaps they’ll get someone who is masterful and who cares. Sometimes, perhaps too often, they don’t. But that’s another story.

This one’s the top dog!

But this story is about the president. This is about the elected leader of the free world. This is about the person looked to by nation’s everywhere for competence in directing discussions and solutions of key issues. So what have we here?

What we have

Well, it appears we have a twice-impeached, twice-indicted former president who is accused of mishandling and hiding some of the nation’s top classified secrets. When asked repeatedly to return them, he dodged and refused. And, of course, he’s running for re-election. If he wins, he can perhaps ask his own attorney general to drop all charges. What a travesty in a country with laws for everyone. Please don’t let him win!

Unlike Pence, Biden

When former Vice President Mike Pence and President Joe Biden were found to have a few documents, these were quickly returned. They then allowed Justice Department officials to review all files they had taken off premises. Quite unlike Trump, as I’m sure you know by now.

Back to Liz Cheney

Liz Cheney may be gone from Congress. But her words remain. Please let’s keep this in mind going forward.
